Cartoons | 05/03/2004 at 16:05:52
Well, here it is the first posting on the first day of the site. I thought I'd choose this cartoon to upload first, as it pretty much sums up the mood of today. The football's on telly...the neighbours are doing some irritating DIY...the water pipes are making their incredibly high-pitched bubbling noise (and driving me mad)...roll on Antique's Roadshow.
Oops. I suppose this should also be something of a mission statement - that I need to lay down the whys and whens and whatevers of the site - it being the first day and all. Well, I think it would be best described as a show and tell. Or as a sort of scrap book. I want to collect images and thoughts and experiences and hold them up for people to see. Beauty and truth. I think these two words sum it up best.
The best a man can get

I'm currently on a bit of a mission to document the rapidly fading hand-painted signs that you still spot around London. The colour in this one is unusually strong as it was protected for years by an advertising hoarding placed on top of it.
Oval Station

They've been doing maintenence on the escalators at my local station since I moved here, about a year and a half ago. This means that every morning all the commuters starting their journey at Oval have to make their way down a scary spiral staircase that I guess in its former life functioned as the emergency exit from the platform level. The ferocious metal clanking noise of people pounding down the stairs at top speed and the psychedelic yellow lines swirling before one's eyes make for quite an experience first thing in the morning.
